Diary of a Wimpy Kid #1 by Jeff Kinney

It’s a new school year, and Greg Heffley finds himself thrust into middle school, where undersized weaklings share the hallways with kids who are taller, meaner, and already shaving. The hazards of growing up before you’re ready are uniquely revealed through words and drawings as Greg records them in his diary.

In book one of this debut series, Greg is happy to have Rowley, his sidekick, along for the ride. But when Rowley’s star starts to rise, Greg tries to use his best friend’s newfound popularity to his own advantage, kicking off a chain of events that will test their friendship in hilarious fashion.

When I first told one of my friends that I was jumping on the Wimpy Kid wagon, I got the most unexpected response. They said ” I hate Wimpy Kid! He is such a jerk! “.

I honestly didn’t know what to think. This friend generally loves most books, and is, from my experiences, a very reliable source of information on the feel for most books. I had suddenly lost some of that excitement I felt for the series.

I knew it would be fine the first time I laughed out loud. Greg, the main character, is a huge jerk! But he handles real middle school problems in the most ridiculous ways. And he just can’t catch a break! Everything that could go wrong, does. Karma maybe?

If you’re worried about your kids picking up Gregs bad behavior, I would suggest asking your kids to talk about the book with you. Not only will you get a laugh, but you’ll have a chance to ask if they think Gregs actions were right or wrong. This book could be a great learning tool for behaviors!

I now understand the hype. This easy to read, crazy funny, very relatable story is popular for a reason! I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

Try out The Diary of a Wimpy Kid! Give Jeff Kinney a shot! He was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the world for a reason!
