The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo

“All my life I’ll think of you, I promise I will. I won’t ever forget you.”

Bertie rescues an orphaned white lion cub from the African veld. They are inseparable until Bertie is sent to boarding school far away in England and the lion is sold to a circus. Bertie swears that one day they will see one another again, but the butterfly lion ensures that their friendship will never be forgotten.

At first glance this book looks just like something my teachers would make me read in middle school. That’s not to say I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed it, I just most likely wouldn’t have chosen it for myself. That’s probably why I had put off reading it for so long. My friend had recommended it to me about 4 different times, and it’s a Heather’s Pick (Heather, CEO of Chapters Indigo, guarantees this book or your money back!) so I decided it was time to give it a shot.

I’m so glad I did. It’s definitely a Heathers Pick for a reason. This book was everything I expected it to be, and so much more. It was smart, well written and definitely had some wonderful life lessons woven throughout.

A lot of this story was surprisingly relatable. Β I expect its because the author placed real life experiences throughout the story. There were some very surprising turn of events as well! And the ending definitely gave me chills. I actually said “wow” at the end.

Everyone should give this book a read! If you love animals, If you love adventures, if you love heartwarming tales of friendship, put this at the top of your list! Parents, borrow it from your kids! Adults with no children, go grab if for yourself! It’s a well paced novel with no lulls. I would definitely re-read this one! And will be recommending it to anyone who will listen! πŸ˜‰

I gave this book a *9.5 / 10*

Check out this video of Michael Morpurgo reading from his book “The Butterfly Lion”. I watched this before I read the story myself, and his voice is what I heard in my head as I read.
