Loki’s Wolves by K. L. Armstrong and M. A. Marr

In Viking times, Norse myths predicted the end of the world, an event called Ragnarok, that only the gods can stop. When this apocalypse happens, the gods must battle the monsters–wolves the size of the sun, serpents that span the seabeds, all bent on destroying the world.

The gods died a long time ago.

Matt Thorsen knows every Norse myth, saga, and god as if it was family history–because it is family history. Most people in the modern-day town of Blackwell, South Dakota, in fact, are direct descendants of either Thor or Loki, including Matt’s classmates Fen and Laurie Brekke.

However, knowing the legends and completely believing them are two different things. When the rune readers reveal that Ragnarok is coming and kids–led by Matt–will stand in for the gods in the final battle, he can hardly believe it. Matt, Laurie, and Fen’s lives will never be the same as they race to put together an unstoppable team to prevent the end of the world.

Warren the 13th and The All-Seeing Eye By Tania Dell Rio and Will Staehle

Meet Warren the 13th, a cursed 12-year-old Victorian bellhop who’s terribly unlucky . . . yet perpetually optimistic, hard-working, and curious. Orphan Warren’s pride and joy is his family’s hotel, but he’s been miserable ever since his evil Aunt Anaconda took over the management. Anaconda believes a mysterious treasure known as the All-Seeing Eye is hidden somewhere on the grounds, and she’ll do anything to find it. If Warren wants to preserve his family’s legacy, he’ll need to find the treasure first—if the hotel’s many strange and wacky guests don’t beat him to it!

Wow!! I did not expect that ending! I suppose I didn’t really expect any of the things that happened in this book! The synopsis on the back tells you the bare bones!! Which I LOVE! You know there will be witches! You know there will be secret codes and mazes! There will be monsters as well!! With all of this in mind, you will still be so surprised by how this story unfolds!

Warren the 13th is such a loveable character! He is kind hearted, hard working and a dreamer of big dreams! You almost forget that he has a face like a toad….I’m not entirely sure of the significance of his odd looks. From the sounds of it, none of his ancestors had his unique features. Maybe we’ll find out in the books to come!!

The other characters are described in vivid color! You instantly love all of Warrens quirky friends, and are very skeptical of all the less than friendly folks that you encounter at the hotel. I can easily see all of these characters in a movie or tv show. In fact, I would be thrilled to see such a movie made!!

This story is such an experiance! It has excellent pacing, wonderful imagery and will keep you guessing right till the end! Even the chapter titles

I had such a fun time reading this story! Appropriate for anyone ages 8 and up, if you like your stories to be quirky, unpredictable and chalk full of adventure, look no further! Give Warren the 13th a go! You will not be disappointed!

The Amulet Series by Kazu Kibuishi

Eventually, they enlist the help of a small mechanical rabbit named Miskit. Together with Miskit, they face the most terrifying monster of all, and Em finally has the chance to save someone she loves.

This post is about the whole series so far, but I have only put up the summary for book#1 because the others have spoilers!

I have been been hearing so much about this series for so long! I had never really thought much about it until I slowly introduced myself to the world of graphic novels!

On the back of book #1 there is a blurb from Jeff Smith, the creator of BONE. It says “Five – no, three pages into Amulet and you’ll be hooked.”. I quickly found this to be true as I stood in my local book store and read the first 3 pages. Hooked! I was hooked and immediately needed more!!

The only thing I regret about reading this series is that I read it too quickly!! I am done book #6- Escape From Lucien, and now I have to wait!!

Book 7 – Firelight comes out March 1st, 2016!! Waiting is hard!!!

All of the Amulet books are action packed adventures with unexpected turns of events!! You definitely don’t see a lot of the twists coming!!

The themes tend to be family, friendship, loyalty, trusting your instincts and believing in yourself! There is also a lot of picking yourself up after a fall and staying strong! Remembering what’s important!

With the growing popularity in graphic novels, I’m happy these books are out there! I know a lot of parents would rather their children read novels, but it is still reading! Especially for kids who don’t enjoy reading just yet. Also, they will be learning valuable lessons! There are some intricate plot lines and heavy concepts that your kids are going to grasp! While having fun doing it! I find that graphic novels are excellent for helping me out of my reading slumps!

Go ahead and devour Amulet! They won’t take long to read at all, but the stories and concepts will stay with you for quite a while!

If you’re not having fun,
You’re not reading the right books!
